The Story

Size:44 x 44 in.

Between the Lines is a serene and luminous 39" x 39" original artwork by Ian H Watkins, capturing the quiet poetry of a Welsh shoreline bathed in soft, ethereal light. Gentle washes of pastel pink, turquoise, and muted cream flow across the canvas, creating a dreamlike sense of space where sky and water seem to merge. Subtle drips and translucent layers evoke the ebb and flow of a receding tide, their delicate motion held in suspension as though time itself has paused.

A shimmering band of gold leaf glows along the horizon, suggesting cliffs catching the first or last traces of sunlight. Beneath it, fine lines of pastel and charcoal trace the shifting paths of water across sand, guiding the viewer’s eye in gentle meanders through the composition. The effect is both calming and quietly uplifting, inviting contemplation and emotional connection.

Watkins’ instinctive and expressive technique—blending acrylics with pastel, charcoal, and materials gathered directly from the landscape—gives his work a raw authenticity deeply rooted in place. He stands firmly within the Welsh landscape tradition, yet his voice remains uniquely his own: emotive, tactile, and profoundly atmospheric. In Between the Lines, he captures the fleeting beauty of shifting light and the hiraeth woven into the land itself.
