The Story

Size:58 x 101 in.

Tim Fowler’s original painting “Black Coffee” (51" x 94") is a bold and arresting celebration of botanical form and chromatic contrast. Standing tall against a dramatic interplay of deep indigo and hot pink, the coffee plant emerges with an almost architectural presence. Fowler renders the leaves in sculptural sweeps of teal and black, while ripe coffee cherries sit like punctuation marks in vivid crimson and cerulean. The composition is delicately balanced, with a vertical rhythm that draws the eye upwards through layers of vibrant foliage to the tender new growth at the crown.

As with much of Tim’s work, “Black Coffee” is both visually striking and conceptually resonant. He deconstructs and rebuilds natural subjects using expressive mark-making, layered pigment and an intense, intuitive palette. Each brushstroke is deliberate yet liberated, offering energy and emotional charge to every surface.

This piece is a compelling example of Fowler’s fascination with plant life and its historical and cultural significance. His interest in crops such as coffee, sugarcane and bananas stems from his own Caribbean heritage, and is informed by in-depth research and collaborations with scientists, including during his residency at Touchlight Genetics. “Black Coffee” encapsulates his ability to transform personal history and botanical beauty into bold, contemporary expressions.
