Shakkei is the ancient Chinese practice of ‘borrowing’ scenery to incorporate background landscapes into the composition of a garden design to enhance the overall aesthetic. In ‘Borrowed Sundays’ the beautiful interior, with its terracotta tiled floor, opulent hangings, elegant furnishings and yellow vase brimming with blue hydrangeas, is a room in Michael’s home in France; but the ‘borrowed’ view was painted in a studio on Spain’s Costa del Sol, which looks out over the Mediterranean.
