The Story

Size:52 x 44 in.

Neil Nelson’s Codex, a 47" x 39" inch original painting, captures the haunting beauty of the natural world through a masterful interplay of light, texture, and atmospheric depth. The composition evokes a vast, windswept expanse, where sea and sky blend seamlessly in a dreamlike haze. Soft, diffused tones of pale blues, greys, and earthy browns create an ethereal mood, while the textured surface, achieved through layering and scraping techniques, adds a tangible sense of movement and depth. There is a quiet drama to the piece, an invitation to lose oneself in its shifting horizons and endless space.

Nelson’s practice revolves around the raw and instinctive qualities of oil paint, incorporating materials such as marble dust, beeswax, and sand to create a rich, tactile finish. His works balance realism with abstraction, depicting nature not just as a visual experience but as an emotional and physical presence.

Born in 1977 in Berwick upon Tweed, Nelson studied fine art and later refined his classical skills at Studio Escalier in France. His work has been exhibited internationally, from London to Australia, and has appeared in major publications such as the Daily Mail Weekend and New York Arts magazine.
