The Story

Size:44 x 44 in.

Every Saint Has a Past is a 39" x 39" original mixed media work by The Connor Brothers, combining vintage imagery, found text and layered paper surfaces to create a striking visual paradox. At the left of the composition, a distressed, film-noir style heroine stands in a slinky white dress, her hand pressed to her temple in a gesture of regret or dawning realisation. She is framed by torn paper edges, as if revealed from beneath the surface of an old book cover, suggesting the act of uncovering forgotten stories. Across the canvas, bold typography states the artwork’s central provocation: every saint has a past and every sinner has a future. The phrase disrupts moral absolutes, urging the viewer to reconsider ideas of judgement, redemption and human complexity.

Below, a panel of perfectly spaced coloured dots introduces an unexpected contemporary rhythm, echoing pop art but placed deliberately against the worn, nostalgic aesthetic above. Scribbled diagrams and faint pencil marks add a sense of process, reminding us that identity – like the image – is layered, rewritten and imperfect.

The Connor Brothers, Mike Snelle and James Golding, have built an artistic practice rooted in fiction as a path to truth. Their works parody and celebrate mid-century book culture while exposing the stories we tell ourselves about who we are. Beneath the humour and glamour lies a deeper message: no one is fixed in the role the world assigns them, and every life is still being edited.
