The Story
Jack Davis's evocative painting, "Incoming Storm at Sennen" (32" x 30"), masterfully captures the brooding drama of an approaching tempest over the Cornish coastline. The composition is dominated by an interplay of dark, shifting clouds and delicate, ethereal light breaking through the stormy sky. The reflective sea below, with its calm yet foreboding surface, provides a stark contrast to the turbulent atmosphere above, creating a hauntingly beautiful scene that invites contemplation.
Davis paints directly from his immersive experiences in the landscapes surrounding his home in St. Just, Cornwall, eschewing the use of photographs to ensure his work is imbued with an authenticity and emotional depth that stems from being in the moment. "When youāre out there," he explains, "you donāt have time to overcomplicate things; itās all about letting the subconscious come through." This philosophy is evident in the fluidity and immediacy of his brushstrokes, which perfectly convey the pulse and flux of Cornwall's ever-changing weather.
In addition to being a practising artist, Davis has been a tutor at the renowned Newlyn School of Art since 2016, further cementing his place within Cornwall's vibrant artistic community. His work has been exhibited both locally and internationally, featuring in prestigious venues such as the Members Autumn and Spring Exhibitions of the St. Ives Society of Artists. He is a recipient of the esteemed Threadneedle Prize: āFigurative Art Today,ā and his artistry has been celebrated in publications such as Future Now: 100 Contemporary Artists by the Aesthetica Art Prize.
Through Incoming Storm at Sennen, Davis invites the viewer to witness the majesty of Cornwall's untamed natural beauty, offering a moment of quiet reflection amidst the chaos of the elements.
