The Story

Jack Davis’s Into the Void (30" x 30") is an evocative seascape that immerses the viewer in a moment of profound stillness and depth. The composition is deceptively simple: a textured expanse of ocean unfurls beneath a vast, moody sky, the two held in balance by a soft glimmering horizon. In this atmospheric work, Davis harnesses a cool, desaturated palette of slate greys, muted blues and soft silver, evoking the hush before a storm or the lingering breath of twilight.

The surface of the sea, intricately rendered with sweeping, circular brushstrokes, captures the constant motion of water while suggesting a meditative stillness. The sky, layered in diffused gradients, seems to dissolve into the unknown, its soft light struggling through the mass of clouds in a delicate interplay of illumination and shadow.

As a resident of St. Just in Cornwall, Davis finds endless inspiration in the raw, elemental drama of the coastal landscape. He paints directly from experience, often on site, allowing his subconscious and emotion to guide the creative process. A tutor at the Newlyn School of Art and a widely collected artist, Davis has gained acclaim for his ability to distil fleeting natural phenomena into paintings that resonate with serenity, power and emotional truth.
