The Story

Size:44 x 33 in.

The Classics XIV is a 39" x 28" mixed media work by The Connor Brothers, presenting a neatly aligned row of vintage paperback spines, each carrying a title that reads like a distilled truth, a confession, or a punchline aimed at the human condition. The books look used and sun-faded, their typography and pricing evoking the golden age of pulp publishing, yet their statements are unmistakably contemporary: “Why Fit In When You Were Born To Stand Out”, “The Truth Is Rarely Pure And Never Simple”. A splash of red pigment to the right interrupts the orderliness, an intentional reminder that reality always bleeds beyond the frame.

The Connor Brothers – the artistic partnership of Mike Snelle and James Golding – have become known for this fusion of retro aesthetics and sharp social commentary. Their story began as an elaborate fiction, a constructed biography designed to shield their identities, which quickly captivated the art world. That blurring of truth and invention forms the heart of their practice, questioning how easily we accept stories when they feel familiar, nostalgic or comforting.

The Classics XIV continues their exploration of myth, humour and philosophy. By transforming books into visual aphorisms, they ask us to reconsider not only what we read, but what we believe.
