The Story

The Idiot is a large-scale mixed media work measuring 40" x 63", presented as a painted bookshelf lined with reimagined Penguin Classics. Each spine is playfully re-titled, pairing well-known figures – from Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk to Shakespeare, Freud and the Dalai Lama – with irreverent, absurd or sharply satirical book names. The central volume, labelled The Idiot, anchors the piece with a pointed mix of humour and critique, while the neighbouring titles range from philosophical puns to cultural commentary. The familiar Penguin logo appears throughout, grounding the work in a world of supposedly authoritative literature that has been subverted, questioned and rewritten.

This piece demonstrates The Connor Brothers’ signature fusion of nostalgia, wit and social observation. By transforming a bookshelf into a stage for misplaced truth, cultural bias and public persona, they remind us how easily ideas take on credibility simply through the format in which they are presented. The painted surface is intentionally weathered, mimicking the patina of well-read paperbacks, further blurring the line between authenticity and fabrication.

The Connor Brothers – the artistic duo Mike Snelle and James Golding – have long explored the tension between fact and fiction. Having launched their careers behind a fabricated backstory, they continue to expose the ways in which narratives are constructed, believed and repeated. The Idiot is not just a visual joke, but a meditation on authority, reputation and the stories we choose to trust.
