The Story
Jack Davis’s Thundering Sky (30" x 30") is a breathtaking portrayal of coastal intensity, where land, sea and sky converge under the dramatic weight of a gathering storm. The composition is dominated by a bold sweep of atmospheric grey clouds rolling in from the horizon, threatening to engulf the serene peach-hued sky above. Below, a glimmering band of light dances delicately across the waterline, offering a fleeting moment of calm before the tempest arrives.
The lower half of the canvas is richly textured, with Davis’s signature brushwork carving light into the sand and sea. The rippling tide, bathed in soft pink and steel grey, captures the shifting mood of the landscape with both elegance and urgency.
Painting from life rather than photographs, Davis responds instinctively to the Cornish coastline that surrounds his home in St. Just. His works are fuelled by the immediacy of weather and light, allowing the subconscious to guide the hand. This instinctive approach, paired with a remarkable sensitivity to mood, has earned Davis a place as one of the region’s most expressive seascape painters.
As a tutor at the Newlyn School of Art and recipient of the Threadneedle Prize, Davis continues to capture nature’s drama with poetic depth and technical brilliance.
