The Story

Size:52 x 44 in.

Neil Nelson’s Tundra (47" x 39") is a captivating exploration of atmosphere and texture, embodying the artist’s signature ability to balance abstraction and realism. The painting presents a vast, ethereal landscape, where an icy, luminous horizon emerges from a rich, earthen terrain. The interplay of warm, earthy reds and deep, shadowy browns contrasts with the pale, almost spectral glow of the sky, evoking a sense of remoteness and timelessness. The layers of paint are applied with a raw, instinctive energy—scraped, blended, and built up to create depth and movement, mimicking the natural erosion and formation of the land over time.

Working from his studio near the rugged Northumberland coast, Nelson draws inspiration from the untamed beauty of nature. His paintings depict landscapes not as fixed scenes but as dynamic, ever-changing entities shaped by elemental forces. His technique is highly tactile, incorporating materials such as marble dust, beeswax, and sand into the paint to add a physical connection to the land he portrays.

Born in 1977 in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Nelson has exhibited internationally, from London to New York and Australia. His work has been featured in prominent publications and galleries, cementing his reputation as a master of atmospheric contemporary landscape painting.
