Vivid Sea

Jack Davis’s Vivid Sea (16" x 20") is a mesmerising study in colour, rhythm, and elemental stillness. Painted directly from experience rather than photographic reference, the work captures the intense clarity and saturation of a bright Cornish day. The sea is layered in tonal bands of turquoise, sapphire, and ultramarine, each stratum shimmering with flecks of silver that suggest sunlight dancing across the surface. These horizontal divisions lead the eye toward the horizon, where sea and sky fuse in a seamless transition of light.

The water in the foreground is alive with texture—ripples and swirls built up with expressive brushwork create a sense of quiet movement and depth. Above, the sky radiates a vivid, uninterrupted blue that perfectly complements the energy of the sea below. Davis's signature restraint in compositional elements allows colour and texture to take centre stage, drawing the viewer into a moment of reflection and awe.

Living and working in St. Just, Cornwall, Davis channels the raw power of the coastal landscape into each painting. His art is grounded in direct sensory experience and embraces the unpredictability of the weather and light.
